1934When Mother India was fighting for freedom from the clutches of the erstwhile “British Raj” a small group of socially aware and truly responsible youth among Coimbatoreans as part of their Vandematram life style had a habit to assemble every evening in quietness. Their togetherness in a habitual manner facilitated their free exchange of news and views about the imminent independence of India. Feeling comfortable at each others company all of them jointly baptised their togetherness as “Club” and got together every now and then possible at a particular place, for sharing a common object –FREEDOM-WITH SELF RELIANCE. Pursuing freedom and to protect a foreseen independent India, the members of the “Club” moved one step ahead by establishing their Association with a Memorandum written with its Rules and Regulations, gave a name to their Club
“ The Rathinasabapathipuram Club” and registered their association as a Club as 5/1934-35 on 05-10-1934. Agreeing to pay a lease amount of Rs. 25/- per month, the Club occupied the property belonging to one of its member, Sri K.V.Subramania Iyer, who magnanimously wrote off the rental arrears due from the Club, for a common cause, the Club and the Club remains thankful to his kindness forever. Realizing the need to establish the Club in its own building the members approached and applied to the Coimbatore Municipality for purchasing a piece of land at nominal price. The land ,site Nos 24,25 to 29, Block- 2 R S Puram was acquired in the year 1938 and a small building was built at a cost of Rs.2500/- that was borrowed from the Coimbatore Standard Bank Ltd., The new building was opened on 07-10-1939 under the Presidentship of MRRY Dewan Bahadur Sri CS Rathinasabapathi Mudaliar.
The Club that started with a Reading Room, set up other gaming facilities such as Tennis (1936) Bridge play (1936) Ping Pong (Table Tennis –1938), Badminton (1938) Caroms, Tennikoit and Volleyball (1941)
Then the history was unstoppable, The Rathinasbapathipuram Club grew leaps and bounds and is known as now “The R S Puram Club”. From the pre independent era to the post independent era and after the turn of the century, at present, The R S Puram Club stands tall awaiting its Platinum Jubilee.
